Did you know that debit cards now outnumber credit cards and have surpassed credit cards in number of transactions made? Prepaid debit cards are what's hot now. They are becoming popular with a segment of consumers that do not have a credit card or bank account. For instance, hotels and car rental companies now only accept credit cards for reservations, including accepting payment. If you don't have a credit card, you can't make a reservation. A prepaid debit card solves that problem and let's you make reservations because the card is treated like a credit card. Sometimes prepaid debit cards are known as stored value cards.

Since it works like a credit card, it can be used to purchase products and services just like a credit card. Until now, If you didn't have a bank or checking account, you couldn't have an ATM debit card. Now you can with a prepaid debit card.

Consumers have choices, and ConsumerCreditCard.com is where you'll find them.

How do I check my personal credit card balance online?
That is a feature that banks may or may not offer.
A bank or financial institution issues credit cards.
The bank that issues your credit card would have to offer the service for you to be able to check your account balance online.
Look for a customer service phone number on the back of your credit card, or on your monthly statement you receive. Most banks on this website offer online services.

How many numbers are on a credit card? Visa and MasterCard, for example, mostly have 16-digit card numbers while American Express cards have 15 digits. This helps if you are questioning a credit card charge and are unsure of the number.

In all cases, the first digit represents the credit card brand. If your credit card number starts with a 4, you have a Visa card. If it begins with 51, 52, 53, 54, or 55 it's MasterCard. American Express cards start off with either 34 or 37. On Visa cards the second through sixth number are for the bank that issued the card. Numbers seven through fifteen represent a personal account number, or PAN. MasterCard numbers are similar. American Express cards have no bank numbers, and digits five through eleven are the account number.

There are 4 basic parts of a typical credit card transaction. First, the "cardholder," who is the consumer, wants to make a purchase. The consumer purchases from a "merchant." Credit cards are given out by a "card issuer," This could be any bank, department store, or oil company for instance. Any financial organization that issues credit cards and is responsible for billing the cardholder is the card issuer. An "acquirer" decides whether to approve the purchase, and then guarantees payment to the merchant. For example, when a cashier at a business takes a credit card and runs it through a card reader, the information on the card is passed on to 3 banks in about 10 seconds for approvals, before you get to sign your name on the receipt.

Keep your personal information to yourself.
Your monthly credit card statements contain a lot of sensitive information you don't want identity thieves to get their hands on.
Even retail store receipts will frequently have your credit card
number printed on them.
Although after Dec. 2006, receipts cannot contain the credit card number.
It's a good idea to shred all financial documents before discarding them.
